Mobile Police Station Time Table and Locations

FACEBOOK ‘PLACES’ – KNOW THE FACTS

Facebook Places is now available in the UK.  This is a new function within the social networking site Facebook, which enables users to log onto their account remotely (using their smart phone etc), enabling other users to determine their exact location using a linked street map.

This can mean that adults and children can easily give out their home, school and other location details to people they do not know in the real world.

While this new application has advantages, it also has safeguarding implications for children and for adults. Some examples are: adoptive children could be found by their birth parent; families in a refuge could be tracked by ex-partners; children could be stalked by a stranger; school staff socialising could be targeted by pupils.

We know that primary children are increasingly using Facebook and a small number do so from their mobile phone. If their location were to be broadcast to unknown ‘friends’, this could put them at significant risk.

We would encourage everyone to be aware of the implications of Facebook Places and to follow some basic eSafety messages such as:

·         Only have online friends that you know in the real world

·         Review your existing friends list and remove people you actually do not know

·         School staff would be advised to review friends who may blur their professional/personal use of social media – people are NOT notified when you remove them

·         Think before you post – what will be the impact of this information?

You can disable or manage this function under Account/Privacy settings. The Hertfordshire County Council e-Safety Team has created a video on YouTube, which can be accessed on your home pc/laptop (most users will not be able to view this on the police system): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJrlEXNEEBo

Facebook also has a help page on this: http://www.facebook.com/help/?topic=places

Theft of Pedal Bikes

Around 150,000 bicycles are stolen across Britain every year, with bike theft proving to be a growing frustration for cyclists everywhere. You can make your bike more secure using the following tips:
  • do not leave cycles in isolated places
  • make sure you secure bikes to proper cycle stands or robust street furniture (but do observe any requests not to use certain items of street furniture and be sure not to cause any damage)
  • lock cycles through the frame, and secure or remove wheels. Also remove smaller parts and accessories that can't be secured, especially lights, pumps and quick release saddles
  • make the lock hard to manoeuvre when parked.
  • do not allow thieves to place your lock(s) in contact with the ground.
  • park cycles safely and considerately where they will not cause a danger or obstruction to others, particularly to older people, young children or people with disabilities. And always lock a cycle when leaving it, even if it's only for a few minutes.
  •  Invest in a good bicycle lock, they are relatively inexpensive - D locks or combination locks are best - look for 'Sold Secure Ltd' approved models or ask at a bicycle shop for a recommendation.
  • Whenever you leave your bicycle unattended, make sure you lock it to something secure, a purpose built bicycle rack is ideal. If there are no bicycle racks, contact your local council to see if any are planned.
  • It's a good idea to take any removable parts (for example, wheels, saddle) with you when you leave your bicycle, or lock them with the bicycle if you can.
  • Get your bicycle security-marked or engraved
More than half of all bike thefts take place from the owner's property so ensure garages and sheds are well secured and never leave your bike unattended outside your home, even for just a short time.

    Register it

    Register your bike at immobilise.com

This will make it easier for the police to reunite you with your bike if it is recovered.

Myself and a colleague will be at the Bennetts End Adventure Playground, on Rant Meadow at 1400 on October 25th 2010 to complete property marking for pedal bikes and to register them online.

    Current Crime Prevention Awareness

Dont give Burglars an open invitation - make sure you keep your possessions secure:

    • Lift the Handle(to engage the bolts) and double lock any UPVC doors using the key - they are not locked unless you do.
    • Lock all doors and keep all windows(including upstairs ones) closed, preferably locked, when you are out.
    • Consider installing alarms and 'dusk to dawn' security lighting
    • Secure your rear garden - lock your shed, shut and lock any gates and keep fencing and trellis maintained. Dont leave ladders and tools outside they could be used by a Burglar.
